Digital Citizenship

Educators need to make sure that they are teaching students about the difference between kindness and cruelty on line and what to do when they see it happening.  They also need to be able to discern others intentions and then they need to be taught coping skills for any negative  attention they, their friends or others are receiving. Have policies and procedures to evaluate and approve proposed online educational services. Be aware of which online educational services are currently being used in your district. Maintain awareness of other relevant federal, state, tribal, or local laws.  We also need to make sure that we are giving all of our students and especially students that come from lower income brackets digital skills and citizenship, because they are more than likely not getting the extra use at home and therefore will be less prepared to go out into the work world and earn as much as students with more digital skills. Have policies and procedures to evaluate and approve proposed online educational services. Be aware of which online educational services are currently being used in your district.

I know what your thinking...it's still summer so why should I be thinking about the first 5 days of school right?  Well that might be right for some of you, but for many others of us school is starting in less than a month!!  So now is the time to start thinking about digital citizenship, because it will never be a once taught idea with the rapid changes in technology.  Read more about how to tackle digital citizenship in the first 5 days in this great article by Holly Clark!

Common Core State Standards Initiative
The Common Core is a set of high-quality academic standards in mathematics and English language arts/literacy (ELA). These learning goals outline what a student should know and be able to do at the end of each grade.

In order to assist schools and districts with the implementation of the Common Core, NYSED has provided curricular modules and units in P-12 ELA and math that can be adopted or adapted for local purposes. Full years of curricular materials are currently available on EngageNY for grades Kindergarten through 11th grade in Mathematics and Kindergarten through 11th grade in English Language Arts (ELA). NYSED is working with our partners to deliver high quality curricular materials for all remaining grades in both Mathematics and ELA. In Mathematics, full years of instruction will be available for all remaining grades this summer. Grade 12 materials will be available in both Mathematics and ELA in late spring 2015.
